The Orono Library has been designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, solidifying its place as an integral part of the community’s history.
Located at 127 Church Street North, the property was built in 1882 and features an Italianate architectural style. In 2022, the Clarington Heritage Committee evaluated and recommended its designation due to the building’s cultural heritage value.
In collaboration with Clarington Library, Museums, & Archives staff, accessibility upgrades were completed in 2023 to ensure it continues to serve all members of the community while preserving the building’s unique heritage. The Orono Mill stone, another significant community heritage piece, was moved back to the library property in March 2024 – coinciding with the Library’s reopening.
